See the Unseen: Personalized Care Through the Lens
At Carver Family Dentistry, a hygiene visit isn’t just a cleaning. It’s a personalized, root-cause approach to protecting your whole body, not just your teeth.
We don’t guess what’s happening beneath your gumline, we look. Using an advanced Phase Contrast Microscope, we can analyze a live sample of your plaque right in front of you. That means we can see exactly which microorganisms are present and customize your care to what your mouth actually needs, not a one-size-fits-all cleaning.
Here’s what that slide can tell us:
- Optimal health: A thriving population of friendly bacteria, the sign of a well-nourished, well-rested, low-stress body.
- Early infection: Fast-moving “spinning rod” and “clock arm” bacteria that hide in a sticky, protective shield along the tooth surface. Left alone, they start breaking down gum tissue and bone.
- Severe infection: Aggressive pathogens and parasites that attack your white blood cells and can travel into the bloodstream, reaching organs, the heart, and even the brain.
This matters because these same oral pathogens have been found at the site of major systemic health events, including heart disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, pregnancy complications, and joint replacement failures. Your mouth is directly connected to your immune system’s workload every single day.
A Comprehensive, Biologically-Minded Visit
Every check-up includes a full diagnostic exam: X-rays to catch what the eye can’t see, a periodontal evaluation, a check of existing dental work, and a close look for any signs of decay.
When active infection is present, we go further with a targeted decontamination protocol using ozonated water, laser therapy, and ozone gas insufflation, all biocompatible, non-invasive tools that reach where a toothbrush and floss can’t. We recheck under the microscope in six weeks to confirm the pathogens are actually gone, not just assumed gone.
At home, we’ll guide you on the specific tools that keep anaerobic bacteria from coming back, along with the foundational habits, nutrition, sleep, stress reduction, and movement, that support your body’s own ability to heal.
Because a healthier mouth really does mean a healthier you.
Oral Cancer Screening
Every hygiene visit includes a thorough oral cancer screening as part of your comprehensive exam. We check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, and all oral tissues for anything that looks or feels out of the ordinary.
To catch what a visual exam alone might miss, we use two additional screening technologies:
Oral ID: A similar fluorescence-based screening tool that helps us identify areas of concern early, when they’re most treatable.
VELscope: A handheld device that uses fluorescence visualization to highlight tissue changes beneath the surface, often before they’re visible to the naked eye.

Early detection is one of the simplest, most powerful things we can offer you, and it takes just a few extra minutes at your regular visit.
